Empty data – a lesson in honesty for the sports writer

I received an assignment: to write a Vietnamese sports article of approximately 4,957 words, based on the source analysis provided. But when I opened the document, I found a set of empty records: tactics marked 'N/A – insufficient information', finances marked 'N/A – cannot assess', match results marked 'N/A – cannot be determined', and all nine analytical sections concluded the same way: there is no data. A writer has two options. The first is to invent figures, invent matches, and invent commentary – producing a long article that meets the requirement but is completely fabricated. The second is to tell the truth: one cannot write an article from zero. As a journalist who has covered football for 43 years, I choose the second option. A free kick may miss the post, a penalty may be saved by the goalkeeper, but a sports writer is not allowed to swap truth for fiction merely to meet a word count. The match in Kazan in 2026 taught me that ball possession is not victory – but that was real data. Here, there is no match, no player, no figure. A 4,957-word article could be written by guessing, but that would be a professional sin. In football, VAR can rewind a situation many times to find the truth. In journalism, we have our own VAR: that is source verification. If the source is empty, the article is empty. The best journalist is not the one who writes the most, but the one who dares to say 'I need more information' when the file is incomplete. I can analyze tactics, criticise players, and dissect game plans – but I cannot analyse something that does not exist. I cannot discuss a match that has not been played, a contract that has not been signed, or a season that has no statistics. The only thing I can do is respond to the editor, just as I am responding here: the source document contains no information whatsoever on which to base an article. Give me match data, statistics, league table results – and I will write. Otherwise, I refuse to write a fictional sports article about a match that never happened. This is not cowardice; it is the integrity of the writer.
